Saturday 13th February - walk ***** - Falkenham Church circuit – Sunny
but cold and breezy.
After yesterdays miserable cold, cloudy, breezy day with yet more snow
flurries when we did not go out, we were keen to get out today despite
another windy, cold day but the big difference being the sunshine:) So
after a morning at home we had a sandwich and with the paths/roads deadly
with ice and a strong onshore wind making it miserable along the prom we
drove a few miles inland to our favourite church at Falkenham taking the
main roads as the smaller lanes were icy and much narrower than usual due
to the snow drifts! The church looked lovely with a covering of snow with
only the odd snowdrop showing but set against the blue sky it was
beautiful:) We then headed down the farm track that leads down to the River
Deben which with a hedgerow each side was nicely sheltered from the wind.
Amazingly all the snow from the surrounding fields had drifted under the
hedge causing rows and rows of snow, our snow shoes would not have been out
of place walking along the track. So, if we can’t get to the mountains
this year for our snow fix today certainly made up for it in a small way
and so quiet too we saw very few people all afternoon:) The track meanders
down to the river looking lovely covered in the white stuff with some
interesting overhangs caused by the snow along the dykes. It was then up
onto the river path where the wind hit us but we had it on our backs.
Ramsholt Church looks stunning on the far bank and there are loads of
waders feeding in the mud. We are only on the river path a short distance
before turning inland on the windy track back up to Falkenham. We were
lucky enough to spot a large herd of deer, maybe 30, never seen that many
over this way as we slowly slog up the hill with the snow deep in places,
we were definitely getting our 6-mile legs! Then we spot five large brown
lumbs in the middle of a field which were too far away to see what they
were but turned out to be hares:) We were pleased to get back to the van as
walking in the snow is hard on the legs but well worth it as the scenery
was stunning! We then took the narrow lane back to Felixstowe which was
very icy with some great drifts, this must have blocked at some point and
the local farmers have done a great job opening up again! Never was a cuppa
and scone more welcome on reaching home. I made a fire and watched the
second half of the England – Italy rugby game, it could not have been
worse than last weeks game against Scotland. England a little better but
Italy have lost 27 games straight so not much of an opposition! The
Scotland – Wales game was quite exciting though:)
